Tifeagle spring transition experiment: Step 2
Tifeagle bermudagrass is heavily shaded for several months each year by a layer that is composed of overseeded turf, sand, mat and accumulated organic matter (top photo). When the overseeded layer was peeled away (in Step 1), the light-deprived chlorotic (yellow) leaves of the bermudagrass can be seen in the bottom photo. The sample was subjected to 3 treatments: 1) overseed was removed by hand and the sample washed to remove sand (left-hand side of sample), 2) the sample was NOT washed to remove sand (right-hand side of sample), or 3) the overseed was not removed at all (middle of sample). Sample was taken in April, 2007 from a TifEagle green in the Palm Springs, CA area that had been overseeded with Poa trivialis and ryegrass the previous October.
