Ring nematode

The ring nematode, Mesocriconema, gets its name from the unusual rings that circle its exterior. It is an ectoparasitic nematode, feeding on plant roots from the outside. The long, needle-like stylet is retracted in this photo, but when feeding, the stylet is used to probe and pierce root tissue, where it then extracts nutrients. Punctures made by the stylet can be seen in this photo of damaged bentgrass roots. See this Reference on Nematode Management for more information.
