Poa vs ryegrass root volume

Healthy poa and ryegrass fairway samples from a California golf course. Poa and ryegrass cup cutter samples were washed to expose the roots. Roots were cut off the mat using a razor blade and placed into a graduated cylinder. Fifty ml of water was measured into a second cylinder. Water from the second graduated cylinder was poured into the cylinder containing the roots up to the 50 cc mark. The water remaining in the second 50 cc cylinder is equivalent to the volume displaced by the roots. Poa has half the root length compared to ryegrass. See this graph for more information
