Larvae of the dark winged fungus gnat

View Larger The newly hatched maggots of the dark winged fungus gnat tend to aggregate together to form a snake-like appearance. Neither the adults (small flies) nor the larvae cause damage to turf, but their presence is an indication that conditions are wet, high in organic matter, or thatchy.
