Kikuyugrass stolon. Stolons run over the surface of the soil and sparingly grow roots into the soil profile. The result is a turfgrass that is hyper-susceptible to scalping during vertical mowing. Vertical mowing in the wrong direction - cutting blades rotating against the grain - will result is severe scalping. Slicing can result in dead areas where the stolon has been cut due to the lack of rooting.
