Crane fly larva
The immature stage of the crane fly is also known as a leatherjacket. They reach up to 1 inch (2.5 cm) in length. Note the bulbous structures at the insect's rear end. These are spiracles, or breathing holes, that the insect uses to take in air and to expel carbon dioxide. The head, which is retracted inside the body so that it is barely visible, is the dark structure at the top of the photo. Click here for a photo of an adult crane fly.
