Cemented aeration hole

Photo of a recent aeration hole filled with sand. Note what appears to be a iron-cemented layer surrounding the aeration hole. We are not sure what the impact of the apparent cemented layer is, but more than likely, the cemented layer interferes with water movement and gas exchange with the atmosphere.
