Calosoma beetles (ground beetles)

Calosomas (also known as stink bugs or caterpillar hunters) and other related ground beetles sometimes appear in large numbers in the spring. In this photo, they are congregating inside a greens cup. These beneficial beetles feed on caterpillars and other insects, but can be a nuisance when numbers are high and/or when they emit a disagreeable odor.
