This beneficial beetle (which measures about an inch in length) feeds on caterpillars (particularly cutworm), and is in fact sometimes called a caterpillar hunter. Although it does not harm turf, it is sometimes regarded as a pest because it appears in large swarms during the spring and because it emits an unpleasant odor when disturbed.
