Insect Order, Collembola. These tiny (0.25 - 6 mm or 1/100 - 1/4 inch long), non-harmful insects live in moist soils and can jump long distances.The fork-shaped furcula (photo on top, right), which projects from the underside of the insect's abdomen, is the structure that allows them to leap distances of up to 100 mm (4 inches). This particular specimen is from the Family Isotomidae.
