Closely related to the imported fire ant, the Southern fire ant (Solenopsis xylonii is a frequent problem on golf course greens due to the sandy mounds that they construct there. The two bumps, or nodes, on the ant's thorax, as well as the 10 segmented antennae, with a 2 segmented club, distinguish these from other nuisance ants. They can inflict a painful sting.
