Southern blight

October, 2007, Southern California, Poa annua green. We are always on the lookout for classic photos of turfgrass pathogen characteristics. This microscopic image is of a clamp connection, a fungal structure that aids in identification of southern blight caused by Sclerotium rolfsii. Sclerotia are also characteristic for this pathogen but the sclerotia may take a number of days to form if they are not already present in the sample.
