March fly larvae

These young larvae of the March fly (Bibionidae) were found in high numbers on a bermudagrass fairway. They are similar to crane fly (leatherjacket) larvae in appearance, but crane flies have smooth bodies, while March flies have small spines on the body, as seen here. Also, March flies have a more developed head than craneflies.
