Fairy ring

View Larger Turf was dead, and soil underneath was hydrophobic due to growth of fungal mycelium. Note the thin, weblike transparent strands of mycelium in the center image. Under the microscope (bottom image), "U" shaped clamp connections are present, which are characteristic of fairy ring fungi.
