Eucalyptus tortoise beetle damage

The eucalyptus tortoise beetle, Trachymela sloanei feeds on eucalyptus foliage, leaving behind the characteristic notches shown here. Both adult and larval forms of the beetle feed on leaves. Heavy infestations can lead to almost complete defoliation. However, these beetles alone are not known to cause tree death. In combination with other more serious pests, though, they can contribute to tree death.
