Kate Entwistle in the UK suggested that nematodes might be involved. Because nematodes are mostly invisible with standard light microscopy, roots were stained using acid fuchsin - a dye that binds to chitin, not cellulose. Organisms with chitin walls (nematodes and some fungi and relatives) are stained red. The stain revealed what appears to be a Pythium spp. inside the roots. No nematodes were revealed by the staining procedure.
