Dark winged fungus gnat larvae
The newly hatched maggots of the dark winged fungus gnat tend to aggregate together to form a snake-like appearance. Neither the adults (small flies) nor the larvae cause damage to turf, but their presence is an indication that conditions are too wet, too high in organic matter, or too thatchy for good turf growth.
