Black fly

View Larger Black flies are small, humpbacked flies in the family Simuliidae. Although black flies frequently inflict painful bites on humans, this particular species attacks animals, and not human beings. Nevertheless, they are a serious nuisance in sports field, where the bright lights used at night games attract them to the heat, carbon dioxide and sweat of players. Their habit flying up the noses, in the ears and around the eyes of players is unpleasant and potentially even dangerous.
