Today, April 6th, is Day 1 of our 2010 Revolver application at Torrey Pines South. We used the high rate (.6) and are doing fairways and 6’ step cut. The weather is sunny, and 60 degrees. I will keep you posted as the app takes hold… I’m not sure if I can get photos on the forum, but I will try!-candice

Candice,
You can upload images and other files (3 per post, not more than 1,000 KB per file) by clicking on the “Options” button located just below the post entry box. Then click on “Attach files to this post…” and browse to the image file on your computer. If you want to upload more than one file or image, you will have to click on “Preview Post” and then add another image.
Let me know if you have any problems.
Larry

It is one week since application. Very slight discoloration, mostly visible on the longer grass in the step cut.

Week two after application of Revolver. Spray lines are visible, and the Poa is getting yellower by the day…

Week three after application. The fairways look dormant. Poa is very weak, and Rye is looking grey colored with rust patches. The very tips of the Kikuyu are greening up, but it is not visible unless you are very close up!

Looks GREAT Candice! We will be taking care of our remaining 11 acres of fairway in two weeks too. Good luck with the recover, hope all goes well.

Week four. kikuyu growth evident. Getting greener by the day. Last app was in ‘07, with a lot uglier results. Remember that since it was done before, the fairways are pretty solid Kikuyu, and results this time are not as dramatic. I see very few areas that may need sod, other than areas that have chronic problems not related to this app. I feel confident that this can be done every year now at a lower rate to keep the poa out. We will not overseed fairways from now on.

week five:Fairways are green again, and its time to verticut! We use First Product’s VC60. There is a lot of dead material in the 1 1/2” step cut, where we had a heavier overseed. We took a tine harrow twice around and swept after it. There is a lot less Kikuyu here, even though Revolver was applied here in ‘07. My guess is that the heavier overseed here has made the Kikuyu noticeably weaker than that on the fairways. We also went back onto our biweekly Primo/iron-manganese app. this weeek.

Thank you for the photos Candice. Are you going at a .20 primo rate every 2 weeks?

Kevin:
We use 30 ounces/100,000 every two weeks. The higher rate definitely helped limit scalping last year.

week seven:
Time to clean up the problem areas! Predictably, there is no kikuyu where there is heavy cart, golfer, or maintenance traffic. I do my best to keep the golfers scattered, but there are areas on nearly every hole along the bunkers, and at the exit from the fairways in the area right before the green. These areas will be seeded, sodded or plugged, in the next few weeks.

Week seven continued:
There are other areas that are weak:
Tree shadows, even from spindly Torrey Pines, limit the Kikuyu. We try to thin them where they impact fairway turf.
It’s a little early in the year to expect the Bermuda approaches to grow through the spray application. Notice the “smile” shape where the approach joins the fairway. We probably should not have sprayed them, but we tried to avoid overlaps and misses by keeping the sprayer on a straight line pass. Remember we did not spray the green surrounds. The roughs will continue to be overseeded. Part of the reason for this is that we have way too many trees around the greens.
Is it worth it? I think so,the fairways for the most part look strong and healthy.
